A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out at Carrickedmond, Killcury, Dundalk, Co. Louth in February 2020.
A total of five test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. Each trench measured 1.8m in width. In total, 157m of linear trenches were excavated. In general, the trenches revealed mid-brown loam topsoil and sod at a depth of c. 0.27–0.51 m, overlying orange sandy clay natural with gravel and moderate angular stone inclusions. In Trench 3, four concentrations of dark brown/black clay containing moderate inclusions of angular stone, bricks and modern rubbish (C3) were interpreted as modern rubbish in pits or field depressions.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete.
