Archaeological test trenching at Big Street, Termonfeckin, Co. Louth, was carried out on 2 March 2020 using a 14-tonne tracked excavator fitted with a toothless grading bucket. A total of two test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. Each trench measured 1.8m in width and in total 64m of linear trenches were excavated. The sod and topsoil (C1) consisted of a brown loam and measured 0.5-1.2m in thickness and lay directly above the natural orange sandy clay (C2). No archaeological features or deposits were exposed. No evidence of the house that was depicted on the 1st Edition map of 1834 was exposed within the tested area.
No further archaeological work is recommended.
