Archaeological testing was carried out by IAC Archaeology at the Black Ridge, Townparks, Ardee, Co. Louth at the site of a proposed residential development. The site lies within the area of archaeological potential as outlined in the Urban Archaeological Survey for the historic town of Ardee (LH017-101). A total of 24 Recorded Monuments are located within 500m of the proposed development site of which only one is located within 100m of the site – the medieval town walls (LH017-101001).
Testing was carried on the 18 November using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. The trenches targeted the footprint of the proposed dwelling and a garage building to the rear to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. A total of five trenches were investigated across the test area which measured 50 linear metres in total. The site was overgrown with weeds and contained patches of rubble and other rubbish and debris.
Nothing of archaeological potential was uncovered during the course of this test trenching.
