Archaeological monitoring was carried out in small field in the townland of Mountbagnall, outside Dundalk, in December 2020. The site is for a domestic dwelling and ancillary drainage and wastewater treatment. A previous programme of testing carried out at the site in 2001 (01E0150) uncovered a pit containing burnt bone and charcoal (LH008-110). The pit was excavated when uncovered and no other features were noted within the trenches that covered the current site.
During monitoring of the site the burial pit (LH008-110) was not encountered as it did not lie within the site of the proposed buildings nor any of the ancillary works. Plough scars and a linear feature were noted to the north of the site. The linear feature contained post-medieval ceramics and red brick fragments. Scorched clay with fragments of burnt bone was also uncovered towards the north-west corner of the site, and this was preserved in situ.
