A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out at Newtown Monasterboice, Drogheda, Co. Louth under Ministerial Consent C822, registration number E4892. A metal detector was also used to scan the spoil for any finds, this was carried out under licence R464. A 14-tonne excavator was used.

A total of 4 test trenches were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width. In total 83m of linear trenches were excavated. In general, the average depth of topsoil was between 0.2-0.3m and lay above natural compact orange yellow silty clay subsoil.

No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified, and no finds were recovered in the course of this test trenching. The area tested exceeded the area to be impacted upon by the proposed works, therefore no further archaeological work in required.
