Archaeological monitoring was conducted over two days in 2019 and again in 2020 for extension works to a private dwelling house and associated outbuilding in the townland of Doolargy, north-east of Dundaulk, Co. Louth. The proposed work is close to the zone of archaeological potential around the recorded monument LH004-047, a much-degraded ringfort, which is subject to statutory protection. The site of the levelled monument occupies the rear of the property, outside the areas zoned for extensions works.
Monitoring began in 2019 with the reduction of ground in the north-eastern part of the property. No archaeological features or deposits were uncovered here and the only finds retrieved were a number of post-medieval pottery sherds recovered from the surface. Further monitoring of foundation trenches to the south of the site in 2020 uncovered no archaeological finds, structures, or deposits. It appears that the plot was terraced during the construction of the original farmhouse in the early-mid 20th century, leaving only a remnant of the original ground level to the rear of the property.
