A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried on a site at Richard Taaffes Holding townland, on Main Street, in Louth Village, Co. Louth. A total of three test trenches were excavated across the relevant areas.
Each trench measured 1.8m in width and in total 41m of linear trenches were excavated. In general, the trenches revealed mid-brown sandy clay topsoil and sod with a combined depth of c. 0.05–0.3m, overlying light greyish-brown silty clay subsoil with pockets of shale exposed at a depth of 0.2-0.55m. Two furrows and a stone-filled land drain were exposed within the northern part of the site. A concrete wall representing remains of a previously demolished L-shaped dwelling was exposed within the southern part of the site.
No archaeological features or deposits were identified and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete.
