An archaeological test trenching programme was carried out at Dalgaish Park, Ballynanty Beg, Limerick on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 of June 2020 . Seven linear test trenches totalling 209m in length were excavated across the footprint of the c.0.5-hectare site at regular 15m intervals . The upcast soil from each trench was visually inspected and systematically scanned with a metal-detector (Licence 20R0110) as the excavation progressed. No evidence of archaeological activity was revealed in any of the seven excavated test trenches. The stratigraphy consisted of a very sparse layer of topsoil which directly overlay a firmly compacted natural subsoil. Embedded construction material was also noted within the upper surface of the subsoil layer suggesting the ground level in both areas had previously been reduced as part of the overall housing development at Ballynanty Beg in the 1970s.
