Archaeological test excavations were carried out as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment in relation to the proposed construction of a single house with associated percolation area, entrance and driveway, and all associated site works on a 0.75 acre greenfield site at Kilmacar, Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny.

The site lies within the Zone of Notification/Zone of Archaeological Potential comprising the environs of a historic nucleated settlement at Kilmacar, which includes a number of recorded sub-elements (KK010-038001 to KK010-038007). The recorded monuments lie to the south of the proposed development site, at Kilmacar crossroads.

Six test trenches were excavated across the site. The trenches measured 15–30m in length, 2m in width and 0.25–0.65m in depth. Excavated material comprised 0.15–0.45m of mid-brown topsoil overlying natural orangey-grey sandy clay. An approximate east-west modern field drain was identified in all six trenches.

No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during testing.
