Archaeological test excavations were carried out as part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment in relation to the proposed construction of a single house with associated percolation area, entrance and driveway, and all associated site works on a 0.75 acre greenfield site at Kilmacar, Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny.
The site lies within the Zone of Notification/Zone of Archaeological Potential comprising the environs of a historic nucleated settlement at Kilmacar, which includes a number of recorded sub-elements (KK010-038001 to KK010-038007). The recorded monuments lie to the south of the proposed development site, at Kilmacar crossroads.
Six test trenches were excavated across the site. The trenches measured 15-30m in length, 2m in width and 0.25-0.65m in depth. Excavated material comprised 0.15-0.45m of mid-brown topsoil overlying natural orangey-grey sandy clay. An approximate east-west modern field drain was identified in all six trenches.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during testing.
