Archaeological test excavations relating to a proposed private dwelling on a greenfield site, were carried out in Dungarvan Glebe townland, Dungarvan, Co. Kilkenny on 10 September 2020. The site is within the same field as two recently discovered cropmarks, identified as enclosures (KK024-147 and KK024-148).
Five test trenches were excavated within the proposed development area. The trenches were aligned generally east-west, and measured 40m in length, 1.8m in width and 0.26-0.4m in depth, and were excavated by machine using a flat-edged grading bucket.
Stratigraphy was consistent throughout the trenches. The sod and topsoil layer comprised a dark brown clayey silt, which was moderately compacted. It contained inclusions of small and medium-sized, sub-rounded stones. The underlying subsoil comprised a mid-yellow/brown, compact clayey silt, having a moderate amount of medium and small-sized sub-rounded stones.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during archaeological test excavation.
