Archaeological monitoring of seven geotechnical site investigation locations, comprising four boreholes, two slit trenches and one trial pit, was undertaken adjacent to the existing Castlecomer Bridge on an intermittent basis throughout September and October 2020. The geotechnical investigations were conducted prior to the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Dinin River, to the east of Castlecomer town. The new bridge is proposed to be constructed to the immediate north of the existing 18th-century Castlecomer Bridge. No features or deposits of an archaeological nature were revealed during the monitoring of the site investigations. The upcast soil from all groundworks was manually spread, inspected and scanned with a metal detector to assist in artefact retrieval. The metal detecting survey was conducted under Detection Licence 20R0130 and all metal artefacts recovered proved to be modern in date.
