Following an earlier phase of testing within the larger development site two further fields became available and a total of six trenches in this phase were mechanically excavated. Trenches were located to assess the general archaeological potential of the site and investigate anomalies identified in a geophysical survey undertaken in the one suitable field (O’Hara 2020).
None of the anomalies from the geophysical survey proved to be of archaeological origin. The north-western field, location of a nineteenth-century quarry, had been contaminated with modern construction debris with a grassed -over topsoil mound in the western area. A loose brown sandy silt deposit was encountered in the eastern end of one of the trenches here but was not excavated below 1.2m for safety reasons. This may represent a feature associated with the quarrying that took place in the field in the nineteenth century.
No features or material of archaeological interest were identified in the test-trenches during this phase of test excavations.
