A series of six north-west/south-east orientated linear test trenches (T1-T6) were opened across the footprint of the proposed development. The test cuttings were 1.5m wide and were opened with a 13-ton back-acting track machine using a flat grading bucket. The thin topsoil cover overlay natural subsoil of light orange (oxidised) silty sandy clay with frequent sandstone and large sandstone boulders. Excavations in the northern corner of the site revealed a c.1m deep layer of sand that was brought in and stored here in the past. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted or recorded in any of the six test trenches.
