A test excavation was carried out in Kealid townland to the east of Listowel as a response to a request for further information from Kerry County Council concerning a proposed landfill development. The landfill site encompasses a 6ha greenfield site on the west side of the Athea-Listowel road (R523) and comprises a single field surrounded on all sides by high overgrown hedgerows. Access to the area during landfilling operations will be achieved through the construction of a new entrance on the roadside and the laying of a road surface from the entrance westwards to the proposed landfill site.
Seven test trenches were excavated to the surface of the natural ground and no features or finds of archaeological significance were exposed.
