A test excavation was carried out in Nantinan townland near Milltown as part of the submission of a planning application to develop a landfill site. The development is for the importation of inert construction and demolition waste for the raising of low-lying lands in order to improve their agricultural output. The nearest recorded archaeological monuments are located over 100m to the south-east of the landfill site and these are listed as a ringfort (KE057-038) and a standing stone pair (KE057-037).
A total of five test trenches were excavated to the surface of the natural ground. The topsoil varied in depth from 0.35-0.5m and the soil profile generally consisted of friable peaty sediment overlying a mixture of grey clay and stony orange/brown loose sandy clay. No features or finds of archaeological significance were exposed.
