The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Ardeevin townland, c. 3.5km north of Glenamaddy in County Galway, was carried out on 30 November 2020. The project, which was in the pre-planning phase, consisted of the development of two sites for dwelling houses. Pre-development testing was considered necessary due to the proximity of two recorded monuments (GA006-001, Ringfort and GA006-001001, Standing Stone), which were located in the field to the north of the proposed development site. No visible surface trace survived of either monument.
The proposed development site was located in a field of pasture which sloped gently down from north to south. There were no features of archaeological significance visible within the field.
The testing consisted of the excavation of five trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development site, while respecting a 20m exclusion zone around GA006-001, which was requested by the National Monuments Service. The trenches measured 70m, 44.8m, 49.9m, 69.3m and 70.3m long respectively; 1.9-2.1m wide and 0.25-0.75m deep.
The stratigraphy in all five trenches consisted of topsoil above natural subsoils. Two sherds of modern pottery were recovered. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
