Monitoring of groundworks at a housing development in Carrowleana townland, on the eastern outskirts of Kilkerrin village in County Galway, was carried out on 2 June 2020. Monitoring was a condition of planning permission and was required due to the size and scale of the proposed development.
The author had previously monitored (unlicensed) groundworks associated with the development in 2009. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence and no artefacts were recovered.
The site consisted of a partly completed housing development. Three areas were reduced for five houses. The three areas measured 22m x 13m, 33m x 12m and 26m x 12.5m. The monitoring of these excavations revealed modern fill associated with the previous phases of the development and natural undisturbed stratigraphy. The fill and topsoil contained modern artefacts. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
