Archaeological monitoring of road improvement works on the N84 took place at Largan, Co. Galway between 18 May and 2 June 2020. The development comprised the widening within existing boundaries of a c. 120m stretch of the N84 between Headford, Co. Galway and Shrule, Co. Mayo. The works were partly located within the area of archaeological constraint for GA042-161, an impressive rath located on an elevated site immediately west of the road. The rath is named ‘Doonlaur’ (Dáurlaur) on early Ordnance Survey maps and its name, size and prominent location suggest it was a site of some importance.
Excavations took place within existing grass verges, primarily on the west side of the road. The ground was revealed to have been subject to extensive disturbance as a result of previous roadworks and excavations associated with fibre optic cable and watermain services. No archaeology was found.
