The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Levally East townland in County Galway took place on 12 March 2020. The project, which was in the pre-planning phase, consisted of the construction of an extension to a dwelling house, a domestic garage and proprietary effluent treatment system. The proposed development was located in a field of pasture to the south of the dwelling. The testing was necessary due to the location of the proposed development within the constraint for a chapel (GA030-090001) and a castle (GA030-090002), neither of which were visible above ground. No features of archaeological significance were visible within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site.
The testing consisted of the excavation of four trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development. The trenches measured 19.1m, 24m, 19.8m and 15.4m long respectively; 1.8-2.3m wide and 0.45-1.3m deep.
Testing revealed evidence of 20th-century activity at the site in three of the trenches with imported topsoil on the surface, above modern fill, above the original topsoil, above natural subsoils. In the final trench topsoil was found above natural subsoils.
Modern artefacts were recovered from the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
