Archaeological monitoring was carried out in the southeastern portion of the site, prior to the commencement of the first phase of a proposed development. The site had previously been subject to archaeological investigations in the early 2000s (geophysical survey 02R0197 and testing 04E1024 and 04E1294), prior to the construction of several roadways and associated services. The site also contained
Stapolin House and its associated landscaped grounds, which is noted (Site ID 2534) by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage and depicted on early 19th- and early 20th-century mapping, with some traces of the landscape features surviving in parts of the site.
The stripping of topsoil and subsoil from a large area was monitored, revealing that the ground had been greatly disturbed, most likely from the construction of the roadways and services. There was 0.1–0.2m of topsoil and subsoil above the natural. This was a firm, dark greyish-brown silt clay with frequent small- to
medium-sized sub-angular stones. In some areas there was no topsoil, just gravel resting on top of the natural, a compact, mottled mid-greyish-yellow and greyish-orange clay.
No archaeological features or artefacts were found during the monitoring of the area of the first phase of the development. Future phases of development across the remaining area of the site will also be subject to archaeological monitoring.
