Excavation was carried out at Brownstown, County Dublin after a programme of archaeological testing in 2019 (Licence 19E0370). This testing revealed a large area of in-situ burning (AA7 & 8).
The excavation of this in-situ burning revealed three separate brick kilns that were heavily ploughed out with no upstanding remains present. The main indicators for the presence of the kilns was the broken brick within the furrows throughout the site and the pattern of in-situ burning. This pattern, where visible, was formed by various temperatures of burning creating a grid pattern of black and red on the natural subsoil.
Post-excavation analyses are ongoing and a final report, including specialist information on dating and finds, and will be submitted to the authorities in due course.
