At the request of RKD Architects Ltd and in fulfilment of a Planning Condition issued by The Planning Department of Dublin City Council, archaeological monitoring was undertaken for the proposed relocation of the FLT building and new canopy to the existing yard as part of the Kegline project at the James's Gate brewery lands for Diageo Ireland.
The site is located within the south-west corner of the St James’s Gate brewery lands bound by James Street to the south, Watling Street to the east, Steeven’s Lane to the west and Victoria Quay to the north, Dublin 8. The subject site is bound to the north by a service yard, to the south by apartment buildings, to the east by mature trees and a graveyard and to the west by trees and a car park.
It is within the zone of archaeological potential of RMP DU018-020, Dublin City and is in very close proximity to St James's graveyard, DU018-020346, which was upgraded to a National Monument in 2014.
The pile cap trenches were excavated by hand and by mechanical excavator (machine was only used in previously disturbed areas) From August 26 to 30 September 2021. All excavations were supervised by Aisling Collins and Jacqueline Mc Dermott.
A spread of 12-14th-century medieval garden soil containing domestic refuse material was recorded sitting above the natural level. Above this level is a later cobbled surface dating to the 18th-19th century.
