Archaeological monitoring of phased earthmoving works associated with a mixed-use residential and commercial development was carried out at Belcamp Hall on an intermittent basis from 2018 to 2020, and no features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest were identified. The site comprised the lands of the former 18th-century demesne of Belcamp Hall (on the site of an earlier demesne) and the residence of Edward Newenham MP; it was in use as a school until recently (2009), Belcamp College, which was run by the Oblate Fathers since 1893.
The archaeological monitoring follows an archaeological desktop study, geophysical survey and archaeological testing (Excavations 2016:029). Geophysical survey and archaeological testing were carried out to establish the nature and extent of two monuments recorded as a ringfort (DU015-033) and a ring-ditch (DU015-116) within the lands which were visible on aerial photography of the area. Testing concluded that these features were early modern landscape features (McLoughlin 2016).
Evidence of plough furrows from recent agricultural activity has been consistently noted in all previous works. Additionally, modern stone drains and debris have been found at the site. There was no evidence to date of any archaeological soils or structures having survived on the site.
