A programme of archaeological monitoring and excavation was carried out at Carechoice, Marlay, Kellystown Road, Rathfarnham. One isolated feature was identified during the assessment, and required excavation as preservation in situ was not feasible in this case.
The feature was a charcoal-rich pit, oval in plan and measuring 1.18m in length (south-west/north-east), 0.8m in width (east–west) and 0.36m in depth. The natural sandy clay along the sides of the pit did not show signs of burning in situ. The basal fill, which was 0.08m in depth, consisted of a very dark brownish-black sandy clay with frequent inclusions of charcoal, moderate inclusions of stones and burnt stones. The primary charcoal fill (C5) was sampled, however as the feature was quite disturbed no dating took place.
No other archaeological features or deposits were identified, and no finds were recovered.
