Excavations related to a Strategic Housing Development comprising 282 residential units on a 3.17 hectare site at Parkside 4, Belmayne Road/Parkside Boulevard, Dublin 13, under An Bord Pleanála Board Order ABP-305623-19.
Test-excavations carried out in June 2020 revealed a number of features of archaeological interest to the west end of the development site; this area formed the focus of the excavation.
The site consisted of a concentration of irregular features generally comprising pits with relatively complex stratigraphic relationships. The finds recovered from the various fills of these features all seem to be post-18th century in date, much of it 19th-20th century in date, with the exception of 6 pieces of struck flint which were recovered from 3 separate contexts, all of which also contained relatively modern material.
Preliminary results indicate dumping activity associated with the 19th-century deterioration of Balgriffin House and demesne with features containing large amounts of glazed pottery, glass bottles and jars, ferrous nails and implements and a notable amount of shoe leather and associated objects. Some of the features may be associated with later garden features such as hedgerows and garden walls. Episodes of flooding or pond activity were also recorded, in the form of silt sediment deposits
