A programme of archaeological testing was undertaken at Charleville, Harbour Road, Dalkey, County Dublin prior to a proposed residential development. The proposed development area is outside the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Dalkey (DU023-023). There are 22 recorded monuments located within 500m of the site. Of these 17 are concentrated in a broad cluster (c. 300m long) along the south-east/north-west portion of Castle Street, c. 270m south-west of the site. This concentration represents the historic centre of Dalkey (DU023-023), which was an important settlement throughout the medieval period, being the best deep port close to Dublin. Prior to the commencement of post-medieval development on the site during the 19th century, the site would have formed part of an open landscape between the settlement of Dalkey to the south and Bullock to the north. During the 19th century a house was built on the site, which was named Charleville. This house is still extant today, although has been heavily modified and extended.

Testing was carried out on 24 August 2020. The trenches targeted the open green space to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site. Testing revealed no areas of archaeological potential.
