Archaeological monitoring was carried out at Pelletstown, Dublin 15 in Summer 2020. The works involved mechanical excavation to formation level for the foundations of temporary school buildings and parking facilities, and excavations for the insertion of two retaining walls related to the future construction of the permanent school and various services ducts and manholes related to both the temporary and future buildings.
The excavation found evidence for two phases of activity on the site. The first was dated to the early 19th century and was a large sandpit quarry and associated ‘metalled’ (packed stone) path. The second was the late 19th-century filling of the sandpit and landscaping for the grounds of Pelletstown House. No evidence for the adjacent medieval castle (DU014-074) was found.
