Excavation was carried out from 20 July 2020 to excavate archaeological features identified during monitoring carried out in 2018 (Rice 2019, Licence Ref. 18E0396) in advance of a proposed residential development (Mooretown, Phase 1). These works were carried out on behalf of Gannon Homes Ltd and are located south of the Rathbeale Road (R125), east of the newly constructed Western Distributor Road and north of the newly constructed Swords Community College.
The excavation focused on three areas (Areas 2, 3 and 4), with the remaining area identified being preserved in situ. Area 2 comprised burnt mound activity (burnt spread, trough and waterhole) likely to date to the Bronze Age and c.20m to the west a series of medieval ditches and furrows were associated with medieval pottery. Area 3 comprised a various medieval pits, spreads and linear ditches. A feature identified during testing thought to be a possible prehistoric structure proved to be a large rectangular pit, medieval in date. Area 4 comprised two pits, one of which contained Beaker pottery.
