Test excavation was carried out between 1 and 10 July 2020 at the site of the former Nissan Plant, east of the junction of Naas Road and Walkinstown Avenue, Dublin 12, in association with a proposed mixed-use and residential development.

An array of 15 test trenches was proposed in the method statement submitted as part of the licence application for test excavation at the proposed development site. Due to parts of the site being in current use, it was not possible to excavate the entire test trench array as originally proposed. Trenches 2, 5, 6, 7, and 10 were omitted from the planned programme of excavation, and a total of 10 trenches were machine excavated.

Many of the trenches were excavated through car park surface, which comprised a layer of tarmacadam over a base-course of 804 gravel. The natural layer was in general a hard, light-coloured slightly yellowish layer of stony clay, which in places gave way to a gravel layer.

Test excavation showed that the present level surface was created by the removal of topsoil towards the west of the site, and the infilling of lower-lying ground toward the east, where the ground would have sloped down to a stream that once formed part of a field boundary.

No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were found during the course of the test excavation.
