Archaeological testing and monitoring was carried out in advance of the construction of a Strategic Housing Development on the site of a walled garden. The site would formerly have been part of the curtilage of Ghort Mhuire, a protected structure which now houses a nursing home in the building located to the south-east, which is occupied by the Carmelite order. The works on site comprised 2 phases. In December 2019 specialist works were carried out to remove an invasive plant species, Japanese Knotweed-Reynoutria japonica. As these works necessitated targeted excavation of trenches and pits with a substantial scope, they were excavated with archaeological supervision, in addition to the observation of strict environmental protocols.
The second phase of works commenced in March 2020, prior to being furloughed during the COVID-19 Pandemic and re-commencing 27 May 2020; this phase involved the archaeological inspection of trenches/pits for structural foundations and the monitoring of all previously unexcavated areas of the site. No archaeological remains or deposits were identified at the site.
