Monitoring was carried out during the refurbishment of and an extension to a building at No. 1 Dean Street, Dublin 8. The site is within the Zone of Archaeological Constraint for DU018-020 (Dublin City), and within the Zone of Archaeological Interest identified in the Dublin City Development 2016-22. Monitoring was carried out in order to comply with the City Archaeologist's requirements as outlined in Condition 11 of the grant of planning (Application No. 3407/19).
Cartographic analysis indicates that late seventeenth/eighteenth-century buildings may have survived within the footprint of the proposed extension. The limited nature of the works involved the excavation of a trench 0.2m in depth to lay piping adjacent to the existing building. The remainder of the yard, which is concrete, was not reduced. The existing ground level was covered over in plastic sheeting and an iron grid laid before it was covered in concrete. It is proposed to pave this extension area in the near future and it will be used as a bin and bicycle store.
No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed during the course of works.
