This testing report relates to an archaeological condition on a full planning permission for the construction of a Lidl food store, provision of car parking, landscaping and associated site works
Due to a regrettable breakdown in communications, construction had commenced some time prior to testing, with portions of the site having being the subject of ground reduction and in places foundation preparation. However, examination of the site on 1st October 2020 under license revealed that in the north-east and eastern portions of the site, only modern made ground was disturbed and that the formation levels for the proposed car park in these areas consisted entirely of made ground.
In the area to the south eight archaeological test pits were opened to examine the depth of modern made ground here. Car park construction will not disturb ground beyond 1.65m OD or c. 800mm below present ground levels in this area. All of the test pits opened showed either modern made ground or disturbed ground extending well beyond this level.
