The Ards and North Down ‘PEACE IV Shared Spaces Scheme’comprised four public realm spaces in Portavogie (Site 1 and 2) and Portaferry (Site 3 and 4).
Full monitored topsoil strips were carried out at both of the development areas in Portavogie (Sites 1 and 2). However, nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered at either site.
Before any invasive works were undertaken at Sites 3 and 4 in Portaferry a metal detector survey was carried out along the length of the paths to be upgraded. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during this work. Furthermore, five stone/earth-cut steps and a low dry-stone wall at Site 3, noted during the initial site visit, were hand cleaned and recorded. It was determined that both are related to 18th-20th-century landscaping within the demesne of Portaferry House.
Invasive works at Sites 3 and 4 in Portaferry involved monitoring the excavation of new path sections, clearance of vegetation and re-grading parts of the existing tracks. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during these works.
