Monitoring of groundworks at a development in Killygordon townland, on the northern outskirts of Killygordon village, in County Donegal, was carried out on 12 December 2020. The project consisted of the construction of an extension to an agricultural shed to include additional slatted bays, a milking parlour, roofed calving and cattle handling areas and associated site development works. The monitoring was a condition of planning permission granted by Donegal County Council and was necessary as the proposed development was located within the constraint for a recorded monument DG078-023, which included a bullaun stone (DG078-023001), a souterrain (DG078-023002) and a dwelling (DG078-023003).
The proposed extension was located along the southern side of a large field of pasture which sloped down from north to south. The extension also included areas immediately north and east of the existing shed which were already surfaced in concrete. The writer had previously monitored (unlicensed) groundworks in advance of the construction of the shed in September 2006. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence. The area monitored included an area to the west of the shed which formed part of the area of the proposed shed.
The groundworks consisted of the stripping of topsoil from an area which measured 34-47.5m west-north-west/east-south-east by 10-14.2m with levels reduced by 0.25-1.1m.
The monitoring of groundworks revealed topsoil above natural subsoils. One sherd of modern pottery was found in the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
