A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out in advance of a proposed development on a site in the townland at Knocknamona, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. The nearest Recorded Monument to the site is a souterrain (DG053-057) located 0.35km to the south. This fieldwork took place on 18-20 November 2020 using a 14-tonne tracked excavator. A total of eight test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. Each trench measured 1.8m in width and in total 987m of linear trench were excavated.
In general, the trenches revealed mid-brown sandy clay topsoil and light yellowish-brown sandy silt with outcrops of stone and pockets of sandy clay subsoil. The topsoil and sod had a combined depth of c. 0.3–0.4m. There were occasional furrows and occasional stone-filled land drains exposed within the trenches, but none were archaeological in nature. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified, and ten clay pipe fragments were recovered.
No further archaeological work is recommended.
