Archaeological test-trenching was required during construction stage of the N22 Baile Bhuirne–Macroom Road Scheme under ministerial direction (A074). Registration number E005300 was allocated by the National Monument Service for these test excavations.
It has been proposed that topsoil will be placed permanently in an area outside the LMA, designated LA22C. As recommended in the impact assessment for LA22A-C the area (LA22C) was subject to archaeological test-trenching of the 3.46 ha area, which resulted in 2,249 linear metres of trenching (4,284.4 m2) to be excavated across the field, just over 12% of the total area..
No archaeological features or deposits were found within the test trenches. Heat-shattered stone inclusions were found within the peat in the most south-eastern trench (TR.11), which indicates the possible presence of a burnt mound nearby but most likely outside the area specified for archaeological testing. Evidence of modern drainage and land reclamation was obvious in many of the trenches.
Following consultation with the Project archaeologist, this was preserved in situ.
