A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken in association with a residential development in the townlands of Dromleigh South and Sheskin, Bantry, Co. Cork. This followed on from a geophysical survey by Earthsound (20R0143).

The proposed site comprises a residential development as follows:
(i) construction of 46 dwelling houses,
(ii) construction of 3 apartment blocks, each containing 3 apartments,
(iii) construction of 2 external bin stores,
(iv) installation of play area and
(v) all associated site works including installation of roads, footpaths, lighting and landscaping

The test trenching programme consisted of a methodical test trench array, designed to assess the potential for surviving subsurface archaeological remains within the proposed site and to target the archaeological anomalies identified by a preceding geophysical survey undertaken at the site.

A total of 34 test trenches were excavated across the proposed site. The exposed subsoil was examined for archaeological features and topsoil for artefacts. Excavation ceased at the first significant archaeological level or at natural sub-soil.

No archaeologically significant features were identified during the test trenching programme.
