Clenor South 2 was located on the proposed N73 Annakisha Realignment Scheme, near Mallow, Co. Cork. The site was situated across several pasture fields on the north side of the current N73.
The excavation, which was carried out on behalf of Cork County Council/Transport Infrastructure Ireland, encompassed an area of 7,054 m² and several phases of activity spanning the Neolithic to early modern periods were investigated.
Probable Middle Neolithic pottery (Carrowkeel Ware) was found in a number of natural sinkholes and it appears likely that the material was deliberately left as votive deposits within these features. A flint hollow scraper was also found nearby. Elsewhere, Bronze Age pottery was found in a number of pits and post-holes that probably represent habitation, although no structures were seen. Later prehistoric funerary activity was seen in the form of a small cluster of ring barrows. Whilst currently undated, these five barrows are likely to be Late Bronze Age or Iron Age in date; a sixth barrow located at a distance from the cemetery may be unrelated.
A ditched enclosure of medieval or early post-medieval date was examined and within the area enclosed by the ditch was evidence of 17th-century activity in the form of a small structure and boundary ditches containing pottery, clay tobacco pipe, window glass and a 1690 ‘gun-money’ coin. Features related to a 19th-century forge were also recorded. Finds analysis and scientific dating will be undertaken.
