Archaeological test-trenching was carried out over a potential archaeological site close to the location of a proposed new dwelling house in the townland of Walshtown Beg, Co. Cork. The purpose of the test-trenching was to ‘assess the nature and date’ of a possible monument (CO065-028) identified through aerial photography during the late 1980s. It is now classified as a ‘redundant record’, as the evidence was later considered insufficient to warrant inclusion as an archaeological monument. While no surface expression of the potential archaeological site was evident on the ground prior to testing, this did not preclude the possibility of archaeological features and deposits being preserved sub-surface. The testing aimed to establish the nature and extent of any archaeological deposits and features present in the area and allow an assessment to be made of the archaeological impact of the proposed development.
In total, four trenches were excavated across the area of the recorded monument and nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
