A programme of pre-development archaeological testing was undertaken in advance of constructing an extension to a biomedical production facility in Carrigtohill. This area of Cork harbour is part of a landscape which has attracted human settlement from early prehistoric times, and continuity of settlement is illustrated by numerous monuments from the medieval and post-medieval periods.
A total of seven trenches were excavated to the surface of the natural ground and no archaeological features or finds were discovered. Non-archaeological features identified during testing and subsequent monitoring included numerous cultivation furrows, modern drains and a north-south orientated field boundary indicated on the historic mapping for the area. All the exposed linear features are interpreted as having an agricultural function based on their shared dimensions and orientation.
