An application to construct a cattle underpass beneath a tertiary road to the north of an existing farmyard complex in Cullen, Riverstick led to a request for an archaeological impact assessment to include a test excavation to be prepared on the grounds that the proposed development is located within the close environs of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO098-037001) which contains a graveyard (CO098-037002/003) and church (CO098-037004).
A total of three test trenches were excavated. Two were placed on the southern side of the road to the west of an existing farm track and over 60m from the outer enclosing element of the ecclesiastical enclosure. The third test trench was located on the northern side of the public road in pastureland. These were excavated to the surface of the natural clay and no features of archaeological significance were exposed in any of the investigated areas.
