Excavation at Knockyclovaun 3 was undertaken as part of the Killaloe Bypass, Shannon Crossing and R494 Improvements Scheme, Archaeological Consultancy Services Contract (Phase 2). The excavation was carried out on behalf of, and funded by, Clare County Council.
Phase I comprised a pit, C012, with charcoal-rich fill C004. Radiocarbon dates from this fill indicate activity in the Early Iron Age with dates of 780-548 cal BC (SUERC-111383; 2521±21 BP) and 755-417 cal BC (SUERC-111382; 2458±24 BP). Phase II comprised linear agricultural furrows which disturbed the earlier deposits.
Analysis of charcoal from the fill C004 of pit C012 revealed an assemblage comprising mainly of oak, with holly and hazel also used for fuelwood.
