The licence was required to monitor the excavation of four foundation pads (0.9m by 0.9m by 0.3m) adjacent to possible remains of a medieval wall. The wall may be the remains of the 16th-century Dromoland Castle which were retained during the construction of the 19th-century house. The wall displays a well-defined base batter and also shows evidence of repair and of 19th-century alterations.
The foundation pads were hand excavated to natural which in this case was boulder clay with a high frequency of limestone fragments. These may have their origins in the demolition of the 16th-century Castle or the construction of the 19th-century House. The frequency of the stone inclusions becomes more random as you move away from the possible medieval wall.
The excavation of the pads did not reveal any other archaeological material or artefacts.
