Test trenching was undertaken within the boundaries of a proposed replacement dwelling at lands 120m west of 23a Barnfield Road, Derriaghy in response for more information as requested by DfC: Historic Environment Division under Planning Policy PPS6 BH3.
Targeted test trenching was carried out on 18 March 2020 to determine if the proposed development area contained the remains of ANT064:011, a potential early Christian rath. Testing revealed a linear ditch within the south-east portion of the site as well as a small pit feature within the north-east portion. Characterisation of these features revealed that the linear ditch feature represented a post-medieval field boundary shown on the 2nd Edition OS 6” map and the pit was deemed non-archaeological. There was no evidence of monument ANT064:011. It is therefore recommended that no further archaeological works are required.
