Three test trenches were cut by machine close to Coolhull Castle, Co. Wexford, to assess the likely archaeological impact of proposed planting holes and land drains. The ground south and west of the castle, used as a farmyard in the late 20th century, had been truncated into subsoil. The base of an early open drain survived the truncation, and towards the north, where truncation became sporadic rather than general, early features may survive.

No remains of a settlement predating the 16th century castle were found on the site.
