Testing of a proposed quarry site was undertaken at Ballymacoonoge townland, Ballaghkeen, Co. Wexford in February 2019. A geophysical survey across the proposed development area (Detection Licence No. 18R0065) identified a number of potential archaeological features within the site.
Evidence for intense agricultural activity was found throughout the survey area consisting of relict field boundaries, cultivation furrows and drainage ditches. The following anomalies were subject to testing: M4, M6, M9, M10, M13, M18, M19, M20, M21, M22, M23, M24, M25, M26, M27, M28. Twenty four trenches were excavated and although Test trenches 9, 10, 13 and 19 corresponded with anomalies on the geophysical survey, none were found to be archaeological in nature. There was evidence across the entire site of numerous cultivation furrows as well as variations in the underlying natural subsoil. No archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted within any of the excavated trenches. Topsoil was removed to a depth of 0.3-0.4m and directly overlay the natural which consisted of a bright orange sandy material, stoney in places.
