As part of the planning permission process, a programme of testing was undertaken on the site of an extension to a cottage (Brosna Cottage). The site is situated c. 200m north of the centre of Kilbeggan town. It is sandwiched between two archaeological monuments: the Historic Town of Kilbeggan (WM038-017) and a water mill (WM038-017008). The site is situated on an island between the river Brosna to the north and north-west and a small disused millrace to the south and south-east, with access gained over a timber footbridge.
As part of an archaeological impact assessment, three test trenches were opened on the site: two on the imprint of the extension to the cottage and one on the site of the proposed effluent system and a section of the new 50mm rising mains.
No archaeological remains and/or features were uncovered in any of the three test trenches opened. Areas of the site has been subjected to infilling/raising levels by the importing of stone trunking and re-deposited natural soil. This was not unexpected given the closeness of the site to the river Brosna and a disused millrace.
