Test testing was undertaken in Charlestown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath in response to planning conditions attached to a development (Planning Ref.:19/6159). The proposed development area is situated on the south-western fringe of Mullingar town, boarded to the north by the R390 road and to the south by the Royal Canal. Aside from a slight incline towards the modern roadway at the north, the site is moderately flat. The land type can be categorised as partially improved pasture, although sections towards the western extent of the site are noticeably waterlogged.
No archaeology was recorded within the test trenches; however, peat deposits were identified at the north western side of the site.
