Test excavations were undertaken in Togherstown, Loughanavally, Co. Westmeath, in association with a planning related assessment of archaeological potential (Planning Ref. 19/7199), given the proximity of a proposed residential dwelling house and associated entrance driveway to Ballintogher Castle (WM024-031) and bawn (WM024-031001).
A total of 6 test trenches were machine excavated at the proposed residential development site on 20 November 2019. The excavated trenches measured 1.6m in width, 14m-25m in length and 0.35m-0.45m in depth. Soil stratigraphy was largely the same throughout all 6 trenches, comprising 0.1m-0.15m of sod overlying a soft dark brown peaty silt layer, which in turn overlay light grey to yellow grey stony clay with patches of coarse grey sandy gravel.
No archaeological features or finds were uncovered during the test excavations.
